Boating Community Alert

 

Due to the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, the Captain of the Port Chicago has established Security Zones within the Chicago land area.  These Zones will remain in effect until further notice.

The Security Zones are as follows:

1)    William E. Dever Crib, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions);

2)    68th Street Crib, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions);

3)    South Water Treatment Plant, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions);

4)    Jardine Treatment Plant, Lake Michigan (between the Jardine Plant and Navy Pier);

5)    Zion Nuclear Power Plant within a 1000 yard by 1000 yard box extending from shore (inside the lighted buoy line);

6)    Donald C. Cook Nuclear Power Plant within a 400 yard by 1000 yard rectangle extending from shore (inside the lighted buoy line);

7)    Palisades Nuclear Power Plant within a 1000 yard by 1500 yard box extending from shore (inside the lighted buoy line);

8)    Dresden Nuclear Power Plant south of the mouth of the canal opening onto the Des Plaines River at river mile 272;

9)    Byron Nuclear Power Plant within a 100 yard radius.

Entry into these areas is prohibited unless authorized by the Captain of the Port, Chicago or the designated Patrol Commander.

Violation of any of these Security Zones carries a maximum penalty of seizure and forfeiture of the vessel (and all accompanying equipment & belongings on board), up to ten years imprisonment, and/or up to a $25,000.00 fine (50 U.S.C. 191 & 192)

"ON WATCH-BOATING SECURITY ADVISORY"

Pursuant to 50 U.S. Code Section 191 the U.S. Coast Guard Captain of the Port of Chicago has designated the below listed areas security zones in Chicago. Only persons, vehicles and vessels authorized by the Captain of the Port of Chicago may enter these zones. Violators are subject to arrest and federal prosecution. Punishment may include 10 years imprisonment and $10,000.00 fine as well as state and municipal law and statute enforcement.

SECURITY ZONES

1) William E. Denver Crib, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions)

2) 68th St. Crib, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions)

3) South Water Treatment Plant, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions)

4) Jardine Treatment Plant, Lake Michigan (100 yards in all directions)

5) Navy Pier, Lake Michigan (South side of Navy Pier, between the Pier and the Water Filtration Plant)
